Real name Stephen Bruner, Los Angeles-born Thundercat came to attention in the early 2000s when he replaced Robert Trujillo on bass for thrash crossover band Suicidal Tendencies. He began to play and record with jazz peers such as Kamasi Washington, Erykah Badu and Miles Mosley. Pushed by his friend Flying Lotus, began to pursue his own career. Having already earnt a name on the circuit for his dextrous playing style.
Thundercat released his debut project, The Golden Age of Apocalypse. In 2011 on Brainfeeder records, which topped Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. He followed up with Apocalypse in 2013, which featured the hits ‘Heartbreaks + Setbacks’ and ‘Oh Sheit it’s X’. It was lauded for its “almost limitless musical eccentricity” (Pitchfork) and “the kind of music you could imagine yourself listening to forever.” (The Guardian) In 2015, Thundercat was a key contributor to Kendrick Lamar’s landmark album, To Pimp A Butterfly.
In 2017, Thundercat released the mammoth, Drunk – 23-track long album. It featured one of his most popular songs, ‘Them Changes’, as well as contributions from Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa and the late Mac Miller.
The death of Miller influenced Bruner’s next album, It Is What It Is, to whom it was dedicated, released in early 2021. The track list included fan favourites including ‘Fair Chance’, ‘Funny Thing’, ‘Black Qualls’.
In September 2023, Thundercat announced UK dates for March and April 2024, including four back-to-back dates at London’s KOKO.
