Unfortunately the Guy Fawkes (or Bonfire Night) celebrations in Glasgow Green have been cancelled indefinitely by Glasgow council.

The return of Bonfire Night has been put on hold. As Glasgow Life say they’re shifting their focus to bringing back the Christmas lights switch-on.

The November celebrations at Glasgow Green have been missed for the few years after they were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was hoped the popular spectacle would make a return this year.

When Glasgow Live asked why the Guy Fawkes event on the backburner. A spokesperson for the council’s arts and cultural organisation said: “There is plenty to see and do in Glasgow all year round, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas”.

“We’re focused on bringing back the Christmas lights switch-on and restoring one of the city’s favourite festive traditions. Which provides a welcome boost to its many fantastic restaurants, bars, shops and hotels.”

As reported on Glasgow Live, the beloved switching on of the lights ceremony is returning.

  1. If this helps anyone attending.

    My daughter and I went last year and had a great time, the shows were good albeit usual rip off prices and the display itself was amazing. However I would advise you folks to get there early and leave early if possible. We stuck about for a bit afterwards to witness some of the most atrocious scenes I’ve ever witnessed. Fighting all over the place, young kids running about with weapons and their language in front of my 9 y/o was deplorable. It was almost like a screen had lifted taking all the decent people with it and leaving this scummy mess behind! I felt sorry for the police and stewards as they most certainly had their work cut out and it marrs what should have been a lovely evening for me and my child who was in fact terrified.
    I hope that doesn’t put you off folks but please bear it in mind if you go.

  3. try out new cafe opened on London Rd at the Barra’s
    … Its called Stefano’s and it’s next to Motoring World
    Foods great and the place has had a massive facelift.
    Going there again when I head down for the fireworks
    Fed up getting ripped off by snack bars!
    Bring back the BONFIRE! I agree.

  4. It isn’t bonfire night without a bonfire! Someone should take notice of this. It’s supposed to be about Guy Fawkes, not how expensive the fireworks are compared to the next town’s display!! I will not be attending. I bet half the kids going to this will not even know who Fawkes is.

  5. The year with Vivaldi techno and lasers was by far the best year so far for me. I hope GCC & Clyde 1 do something similar again 🙂

  7. i dont think bonfire nite is as good as it used to be when they had the bonfire thats what bonfire nite is all about the excitment for kids and i loved glasgow green when i was a little girl so i say bring bak the bonfire

  8. can you take young children in a buggy or is the ground all mucky that the wheels would get stuck and everyone pushing into the buggy? thanks if anyone could help.

    1. Hi Holly,

      You can take your buggy, but like you said it may be muddy on the grass sections. In past years most of the grass areas have been ok with just some areas being quite wet and difficult to walk in, but it has been quite rainy in recent weeks.

      You could of course stick to the concrete paths, but that can be quite hard and not where you will get the best views of the show.

      As for people bumbing into your buggy, the only time you will find it a problem will be at the end of the show when everyone tries to leave all at once.

Last years fireworks were the best , really cool, i think the radio clyde Dj and music added to the buzz and excitement and the weather helped too , we are are regulars as the kids , and the neighbours kids , and the neighbours neighbours kids seem to tag along for the funfair …if you have never been its a safe fun evening as long as the weathers good . My 10 year old missed the lasers at the front of the park last year though its all he talks about . Lets hope for some decent weather again as its one of our favourtite trips of the year , somehting for us all

I was at glasgow green last year for the fireworks display with my fiance we’d been engaged at that point just over a month and he’d recently moved up from england. i took Him to show how great a firework display glasgow has to offer every bonfire night.its truly amazing all the colours in the sky made by the fireworks were awesome. i hadn’t been to the display since i was 12years old and i remember wearing welly boots because it was raining that day and it was very muddy all through the park. i live in the westend of glasgow so it takes a fair bit to get to but ultimately worth it. i’m now 3months pregnant and i will definitely be taking my child in many years to come because i just now they will love each and every minute of it 🙂

  11. I know it’s early, but I’m actually looking forward to this years fireworks at Glasgow Green already. It’s always a great show and I’m sure this year’s will be the same.

  12. I have taken my children to this event every year for the last 12 years. They have greatly enjoyed it. The display is better than anything you can have at home and alot safer too. The atmosphere is electric and I would reccommend it to anyone with or without kids. Not to be missed.

  13. I was at Glasgow Green Fireworks event last night and it was wonderful. All in all it was a spectacular Bonfire Night show with fireworks set to music and hosted by Radio Clyde’s George Bowie. It looked just magical.

  14. Had a fantastic night at the fireworks diaplay. My boyfriend has been living in Newcastle for 10 years from the age of 23 to 33 and moved back to Glasgow at the beginning of this year as he wanted to be back in Scotland and near his family. We went to the firework display last night and he thought it was a fantastic atmosphire compared to one’s he had went to in England. He loved the clyde one roadshow and the fact there was absolutely thousands of people there with no trouble just a great experience. This is why I would love to take him to the christmas light swith on as he is so proud to be scottish and loves the patriotic feeling of everyone who lives here no matter what there accent is has a wonderful evening.

  15. As a tradition I took the family along to the fireworks display at the Green. This is a spectacular event that incorperates the jaw dropping display with the fun and lively music. Clyde 2 hosted the event and kept the crowd entertained by light hearted comedy and giveaways to other events. It is an occasion for all the family and is extremely cost effective as admission is free. My family and I will be bck year after year!

  16. Every year I go to Glasgow green and watch the fireworks with all my family. This year was slightly different, as lots of people are in different countries so I thought why should me(16) and my sister(13) miss out just because everyone else is. So i took her and a couple of her friends into town for dinner then offto glasgow green. We went to Bella Italia, which was lovely! It had such a good family atmosphere and the foood was gorgeous! So walking to the park was great fun in itself! There was so many people, walking over the roads and pavements it was like being in New York or something ! hehe. On the way there was some people selling flashing light up toys, so ofcourse the girls had to have one! And in true Glasgow style ofcourse : two for a fiver ! =D!

    Eventually we reached the park and we could hear George Bowie a mile away! He always gets teh crowd going. So after a wee sing along to Ke$ha – tik tok we waited for about five minutes eating our candyfloss haha and booom! The countdown started. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 BANG!! It was amazing, the fireworks themselves get better and better each year. We all took loads of pictures which are now on bebo! and we even got someone to take a picture of us four girlies with the fireworks int he background. Then after fireworks we had a short walk back to the train station, this was probably the one and only time i have ever seen Glasgow as busy. People just walking all over the place, it was as if the cars weren’t even there. After about a ten minute walk we reached the train station and off we went on the train, with three nackered little girls ! We all slept well that night, but yet again will be coming next year and the year after that and the year after that ……. =)!

  17. I was at Glasgow Green last week for bonfire night with one of my friends. Have not been since I was younger and I am now 20. It was a brilliant atmosphere and there was alot of families there. I am pregnant with my first child and it made me so happy to see what a safe environment Glasgow Green was that night and made me realise that is a night I am definately going to enjoy taking my little one too once he or she is old enough. I still enjoy seeing all the fireworks and it is a great 20-25 minutes for anyone of any age. Hope it will continute to be a great event for a long time to come.

  18. I was at Glasgow Green and it was a great night. The weather was perfect too which made it even better. The fireworks were fantastic, loved it!

  19. Glasgow green is the best – I’ll tell u why 😉 When you have children it’s the safest place to go for real entertainment and a wonderful evening for all the family and everyone will keep safe.
