Hogmanayday!

Hogmanayday!

George Square at the Bells

When: 31st December 2014
Location: George Square

Free

Glasgow’s traditional Hogmanay party in George Square is no longer. Instead, we have fantastic family-friendly events throughout the day on hogmanay.

The new years eve event in 2014 bringing in 2015 will finish at 10pm and feature music and free fun for all the family with kids’ activities including themed crafts and storytelling, highland dancing, ceilidh bands, and traditional Scottish food, drink and entertainment. The aim is to create a family day in George Square rather than a one-off party.

If you are looking for an outside street party to bring in the new year, there is one happening in Ashton lane. Might be more of what you are looking for.

2015 promises to be a great year for Glasgow, so bring it in in style with at George Square with a traditional family celebration with the best in Scottish music, food and drink.

Full details of the George Square Hogmanay party will be released in the coming weeks, sign up to our newsletter to stay up to date with the latest news on what’s happening in Glasgow.

Hotels near George Square

If you aren’t from Glasgow and you are planning on being around for the celebrations at George Square this new years eve or as we say in Glasgow Hogmanay. Then you’ll probably need a hotel, a smart idea would be to book a hotel in the city centre, or even better, a hotel on George Square.

  1. Nicky, yes you are allowed to take your own drink into the square, but it must be in plastic bottles. Big Welshy on this forum advised its best to take your own as you could queue for ages at the drink tent.

  2. Hi – I’m coming from Liverpool for Glasgow Hogmanany and staying at the Millennium Glasgow Hotel – can any1 tell me if you are allowed to take your own drink into the Square?

  3. Hi Folks

A question to anyone who has been to the bells in Glasgow, when you’ve entered the square with your ticket can you get back out and in again?

  4. Yeh I agree with Dom about the way the band was hyped.

It was just such a let down, where as if they just said. Ok its Deacon Blue I would have said oh thats crap but probably eventully bought my ticket anyway.

I mean what about Franz, Snow Patrol, Belle & sebastian if we are being scottish. But we could also have a non Scottish Band Playing it will be 2010 after all.

I mean we could even get a dance act. Faithless, chemical brothers, Daft punk.

    Think outside the box please!!!!

  5. It was only 15 quid for a ticket, pretty standard price (stirling £15, Edinbugh £10). If you wanted to choose a band to go see on Hogmanay it would cost about £40 (thats What Madness costs) and it’s really not about the band – it’s about the whole night.

But since Dom is so hung up on the band. It was advertised as a Scotish superband with multiple number 1 albums, and Dom like it or not Deacon fit that bill.

It’s a good choice in my opinion. Who were you expecting Dom? Who would you like to see?

  6. Sharon, its the way they billed them that was the disappointment and the pricetag doesn’t really reflect the way its been advertised.
Its a lesson learned, I wont book before its been announced next time! 😛

I will have a cracking time one way or another! Booze in plastic bottles? Didn’t know you could take anything in so thanks for that.

I hope everyone has a cracking New Year whatever you do.

  7. Why was the headliner held back, was it because they still had to get an act?!?!?!?!?!

I’m happy with Deacon Blue, after all, I’m going to celebrate and enjoy the end of the year and the start of another with my husband. The atmosphere will be fantastic, can take your own booze and enjoy some great fireworks! However, I do think they should have let people know who was headlining the show when the tickets went on sale, this would have stopped people like Dom being out of pocket for a group he clearly dislikes.

  8. Hold my hands up, I got it wrong. I only read the FP of edinburghshogmanay.com
I would still rather be over in Edinburgh for the street party as the acts are better and its 50% cheaper.. I would say a lot of people will have heard of The Enemy, Frightened Rabbit and We were promised jet packs maybe not so much of Stanley Odd.
The Enemy are at least current unlike DB.

If your happy with the Glasgow lineup then fair play to you but I feel robbed. You don’t work for the Glasgow board of tourism by any chance do you?

If your the type of person thats gonna be attending this event then I might be as well giving the ticket away.

  9. Oh Dom you are so Wrong! – You clearly don’t read information very well – Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party event line-up is The Enemy, Frightened Rabbit, We were promised jet packs and Stanley odd.

I would bet most people have no idea who any of them are.

There are other separate events going on in Edinburgh on the 29th, 30th, 31st, 1st and 2nd where you might well see some of the other acts you mentioned. If you want to see Madness they are playing a separate event that cost £40 a ticket just like a normal Gig.

It’s at this point Dom where you say to yourself “OK I’m a dumbass, I should just keep my mouth shut because all that comes out is mince!”

Hopefully you will give your ticket away, one less numpty!

  10. Actually Edinburgh’s is Madness, The Enemy, MYLO, Calvin Harris, Noisettes, Codeine Velvet Club and Frightened Rabbit. Lets not gloss over the facts to make a point shall we not Sanity?

Glasgow have 3 acts confirmed, 2 of which nobody in the world would struggle to book for a pork pie and a pickled onion and the main event are a band well on their way out as well as the winner of the unsigned acts competition. Absolutely not anywhere near comparable to Edinburgh’s, I went there last year and it was good but I fancied Scotlands other big city this time round and I feel I’ve had the michael taken here for £15.
I will happily give them away to charity if I cannot get a refund because I’d rather be in a nice wee pub having a party than being freezing cold whilst not being entertained by some hasbeen band!

    Hope you’s enjoy it!

  11. very true comment from voice of sanity

grow up if you dont want to go iam sure tickets would make a very nice xmas gift for somone that would love to go

  12. What are you people talking about – The headline act in Edinburgh is the Enemy, a band from Coventry with 2 albums that was the next big thing in 2007 and since then been on the decline.

Now Deacon Blue may not be what some people are wanting – but they are easily better than the Enemy – No one band could satisfy everyone and the night is not about the bands it’s about celebrating hogmanay!

I think Deacon Blue are the perfect choice and if you are lucky enough to be going this year, you’ll understand why after the event. And after they finish playing “Dignity” and the whole of George square recover their voices after signing along all you commenter’s moaning about Deacon Blue will say “Christ that was amazing – I feel very silly for writing those comments”

  13. Admin, we know you’re not in charge of the event. Its just to merely show our disgust in a public forum!
Deacon Blue did Stirlings hogmanay last year ffs!! Hardly a mega band, I wont make the mistake of coming upto Glasgow for Hogmanay again. Edinburgh has much better bands and it was cheaper! Absolutely the cheap way out by Glasgows organisers. Im sure I could get Deacon Blue to perform at my birthday party but my guests would think I was taking the p***
Very unhappy for £15 plus booking fee 🙁

  14. No they are not that bad and good in THEIR day! the way it was hyped up and kept secret I would of thought it was gonna be someone BIG! Ah well I will still enjoy hogmanay 🙂

  15. Dear Readers.

Please note that we are not not the organisers of this event. We are merely one of the vessels through which information is carried to you…

Any complaints should be directed elsewhere. The organisers are Culture and Sport Glasgow, on behalf of Glasgow City Council. If you would like to get in touch with them, you can email them on events@csglasgow.org or call 0141 302 2845.

Also, we have had a few comments that have been a little bit (and in some cases a large bit) too explicit to display. If you would like your opinions to be voiced, please try to keep swearing to a minimum.

Besides, if it is going to be Deacon Blue, they are definitely not that bad…

  16. Hmmm seems now ticketsoup have taken off the picture of deacon blue who THEY said were headlining and it now says still to be announced!

  17. Deacon Blue,

That’l be right. that is the worst headliner ever.

Superband yeh like 20 year ago.

They have also played before and if I remember right they didnt even headline.

Top secret, why is that? because nobody would go if they new.

How do I go about getting a refund.

I am absalutly outraged that I have paid £15 for Deacon Blue, there are a million bands outhere and this is what you pick.

This is the worst headliner since athlete.

    I really cannot believe it.

How out of touch use are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. I heard the line-up was Frightened Rabbit, Tommy Reilly and Pearl and the Puppets. Anyone else hear anything like this?

  19. I thought of Biffy Clyro too but I checked their tour date calender and they are away to Sydney or Melbourne at some festival. So no chance of that.
I wouldnt mind Franz Fredinand or Travis but if its Deacon Blue or Hue and Cry or I will just be away back to my hotel.

Staying at Rab Ha’s, based on the recommendation of a mate of mine. Has anyone been in before?
Not bad really bed and breakfast £79, but the rooms look magic and its about 500 yards or so from Georges Sq.
