It’s one of the rare rock singles that has been capturing imaginations for generations now. And 50 years in, Journey are still bringing the same passion and world-class chops as ever to the stage. Both to their new material and to their impressive, enduring back catalogue.
Formed in San Francisco
Journey were formed in San Francisco in 1973. Comprising former members of groups including Santana and Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Initially a progressive-rock and jazz-fusion band. The group soon signed with Columbia Records and released their debut studio album, Journey, in 1975. This was followed by 1976’s Look Into The Future and 1977’s Next.
In 1977, aiming for a more commercially-oriented sound, Journey brought on board lead singer Steve Perry. Whose soaring vocal range would go on to define the band’s biggest hits and make him one of his era’s most recognisable vocalists. The group released their first album with Perry, Infinity, in 1978. It made their first major splash on the Billboard charts. They followed this with the albums Evolution and Departure in 1979 and 1980. Which continued to build on their commercial success, including the singles ‘Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’’ and ‘Any Way You Want It’.
Seventh Album
Having added keyboardist Jonathan Cain to the line-up, Journey released their seventh album Escape in 1981. The album headed to the top of the Billboard chart and spawned the smash hit singles ‘Who’s Crying Now’, ‘Open Arms’, and of course, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ – which as of 2024 is the biggest-selling track of all time in America at 18x Platinum. The group continued touring as one of the most successful rock groups of the era. They released their eighth album, Frontiers, in 1983, which became their highest-charting album in the UK and included the top-20 singles ‘Faithfully’ and ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Away)’.
In 1986, Journey released their ninth album, Raised On Radio, featuring more successful singles including ‘Be Good To Yourself’ and ‘I’ll Be Alright Without You’. The group announced a hiatus in 1987, releasing the Greatest Hits compilation in 1988 which went on to become the third highest-selling greatest hits release of all time. They reunited in 1996 to release their tenth studio album, Trial By Fire. Hit single ‘When You Love A Woman’ received the band’s first GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
After Perry’s departure from the band and replacement with Steve Augeri, Journey commenced their first tour in over ten years in 1998. They released the album Arrival in 2001, and the EP Red 13 the following year. In 2005, the band were inducted into the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. The same year, they released their twelfth studio album, Generations.
First tour in over 10 years
In 2007, the group named Filipino singer Arnel Pineda, with whom they initially connected via Youtube, as their new lead vocalist. In 2008 they released their first album with Pineda, Revelation, which received positive reviews and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The ensuing tour became one of the highest-grossing of 2008. In 2011, the band released the album Eclipse as well as their second greatest hits compilation. The band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017.
In 2022, Journey released their fifteenth studio album, Freedom. In 2024, the band will bring their 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour to the UK and Ireland, accompanied by special guests Cheap Trick.
